The Calgary Police Service is seeking public assistance related to the theft of a number of war medals and other personal property from a home in northwest Calgary. The medals belonged to Sgt. Daniel Hartigan, who parachuted into Normandy ahead of the Allied D-Day invasion of 1944 while part of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. He died in 2001, leaving his medals to his son. Hartigan also wrote the book ‘A Rising of Courage, Canada’s Paratroops in the Liberation of Normandy‘.
On Tuesday, July 21, 2015, sometime between the hours of 2:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., an unknown offender(s) gained entry into a home located in the 400 block of Hawkford Way N.W. A number of items were taken from the home including jewelry, watches and silverware. Also stolen were a number of World War II medals.
